Hyaluronic Acid & Collagen: A Hydration Duo

Two of skincare’s best-known hydrators, and why they work better together than apart.

Hyaluronic Acid & Collagen: A Hydration Duo

Hyaluronic acid: the water magnet

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a humectant, which means it attracts and holds water. It can hold many times its own weight in water, which is why it is a staple of serums and masks. It plumps the look of skin and softens the appearance of dehydration lines.

Collagen: the comfort layer

Hydrolyzed collagen adds slip, softness and a light film that helps keep water at the surface. HA pulls moisture in and collagen helps keep it there, so together they cover both halves of hydration: getting water in, and keeping it in.

Using them well in Indian weather

Humectants work best when there is water to draw. In humid cities like Mumbai or Chennai they can draw moisture from the air. In very dry heat or air-conditioned rooms they may pull it from deeper in the skin, so apply on damp skin and seal with a moisturiser or mask. That is why sealing moisture in matters.

Who should be careful

HA and collagen are generally gentle, but any product can irritate sensitive or reactive skin. Patch test first, and if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or using prescription treatments, check with your doctor before adding new products.
